Hydrostatic fire extinguisher testing is the process of testing the pressure of the canister to make sure that the fire extinguisher can continue to safely contain the pressure buildup by the fire suppression material.

Each canister type, A, B, or C, has a specific pressure rating that needs to be maintained in order to certify that the canister will be safe and effective when used in the event of a fire.

Annual inspections should be conducted on all fire extinguishers and required to perform hydrostatic testing on every fire extinguisher every 5 to 12 years, depending on the type of extinguisher.
